MOTOR VEHICLE PERSONAL INJURY

Road Crash Statistics

Motor Vehicle Personal Injury Insurance is compulsory in all States and Territories of Australia. It is commonly referred to as Compulsory Third Party (CTP) Insurance. The Insurance Commission is the sole provider of CTP Insurance in Western Australia and the Motor Vehicle Personal Injury Division (MVPI Division) of the Insurance Commission deals with all personal and fatal injury claims resulting from motor vehicle crashes involving Western Australian registered vehicles. The Western Australia CTP scheme is a common law scheme, where for a personal or fatal injury claim to be successful, negligence must be established against the owner or driver of a Western Australian registered motor vehicle.

The Insurance Commission's figures include all crashes involving WA registered vehicles, which result in personal injury, that have been reported to us, whether occurring on or off roads. These figures are not categorised or restricted by the magnitude or circumstances of the crashes. The definition of a crash, for our purposes, is any incident involving a WA registered vehicle that results in personal injury being sustained.

The Insurance Commission maintains a database on CTP insurance claims and de-personalised statistics extracted from this database are used by researchers and other interested parties, together with statistics from other sources, for a variety of purposes including road safety.

Please note that the Insurance Commission accepts no liability whatever for any loss or damage suffered by any person or corporation resulting from the use of these statistics. In addition, the Insurance Commission does not guarantee system availability and is not responsible for any losses associated with any system unavailability.
