Catastrophic Injuries Support
Catastrophic Injuries Support
The Catastrophic Injuries Support (CIS) product provides lifetime treatment, care and support to all people if they are catastrophically injured in a crash in WA and are unable to claim against CTP. Catastrophic injuries are spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, multiple amputations, severe burns and permanent traumatic blindness.
The cost of lifetime care and support for a person with catastrophic injuries can be immense. The average estimated cost for lifetime care per person is over $3 million but can exceed $15 million for those with greater care needs.
Our CIS team work directly with people who have been catastrophically injured, their families and support teams. This approach allows for collaboration when determining the rehabilitation program, the recovery goals, return to work/home arrangements and ongoing support needs. Our goal is to improve the quality of life and independence outcomes for those who have experienced life-changing injuries from a road accident.
The level of treatment, care and support provided will be determined based on what is necessary and reasonable for each person catastrophically injured. Our fact sheets outline this in more detail.
Service Providers
We pay registered service providers to deliver treatment, care and support to our CIS scheme clients.
Providers seeking to register should complete and submit the registration form to the Insurance Commission. The registration form also sets out the terms and conditions for providers. Health professionals must be registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) to provide treatment, care and support services to CIS clients.
The Insurance Commission can use a provider who is not on the register to deliver a particular service. This often occurs to cater for regional and remote areas of Western Australia and in exceptional circumstances.
The Motor Vehicle (Catastrophic Injuries) Act 2016 and the Motor Vehicle (Catastrophic Injuries) Regulations 2016 set out the CIS scheme details.
