Treatment care and support

Support for participants

Following your accident you may require ongoing treatment, care and support services.

Your treatment, care and support may include:

  • Ambulance transport;
  • Rehabilitation;
  • Domestic assistance;
  • Education and vocational training;
  • Respite care;
  • Medical treatment;
  • Dental treatment;
  • Home and transport modifications;
  • Attendant care services; and
  • Assistive technology and equipment.

Necessary and reasonable treatment, care and support

Treatment, care and support must be necessary and reasonable to be funded by the Catastrophic Injuries Support Scheme. The definition of necessary and reasonable if the treatment, care or support:

  • Is designed to support you to maximise your independence;
  • Supports your capacity to undertake activities of daily living and enable you to participate in the community and/or employment
  • Is evidence based and cost effective; and
  • Is delivered by a suitable provider.

What is not included in the Catastrophic Injuries Support Scheme provisions?

  • Services for injuries or medical conditions unrelated to the accident.
  • Ordinary costs of living (e.g. rent, household bills, car costs etc).
  • Ordinary costs of raising a child.
  • Compensation for economic loss,  pain and suffering and gratuitous  care and support.
